Solar park or solar farm?
They are different terms for the same thing. Essentially it is a commercial or utility scale solar PV system mostly developed on agricultural land, however more modern technologies mean this can be extended to be on water.
Solar parks are most often constructed by developers who enter into long term (25 year) land lease agreements with farmers or landowners who are paid an inflation index rent for the use of their land.
Once the solar generator has completed its first year of operation and met its performance targets the developer will usually assign the lease to a third party investor such as a pension fund.
Is there an environmental impact on the land?
Solar parks cause very little environmental impact and do not require a ‘change of use’ as they are given 25 year temporary planning consent. They can co-exist alongside use of the land for grazing sheep or poultry, as well as fulfil set aside land and biodiversity enhancement objectives. If required a solar park can be completely removed without trace.
